What to Expect
Testing typically takes between four and six hours depending on the referral question. Psycholeducational evaluations include an in depth interview with the client and/or the client's parents/ guardians regarding developmental history, family dynamics, educational history, and history of social/emotional/ and behavioral concerns. This interview typically lasts one hour.
When the referral question is related to educational issues, teachers/ professors are also interviewed by phone or asked to fill out information regarding the clients behavior and performance in the classroom.
Following the clinical interview, the client is asked to complete a series of activities that measure their ability in verbal areas, performance areas (math, complex thinking, abstract thinking), memory, attention, and visual-motor skills. Other areas are evaluated as needed based on the referral question.
A follow-up appointment is scheduled three weeks following the completion of testing. During this appointment, clients are given a comprehensive written report. The results of the tests are explained in a clear and accessible way that highlights areas of strength and provides recommendations for areas that are not as well developed. Children seven years old and older are encouraged to attend this feedback session so that results can be explained directly to the child and any questions can be answered.
Educational Services / Documentation for Accommodations
Students with an IEP (Individualized Educational Plan), and students attending private school typically need to be re-evaluated every three years to provide documentation for the continuation of services or accommodations. To obtain testing accommodations for the SAT or ACT, students need to be evaluated within five years of the standardized testing date.
